Department of Air Force
Research
The research aims at the field of defence research and responds to the current problems of the Czech Air Forces. The department participates in the research and development in the field of simulation technologies (TECHSIM) and in development of partial system components of air control and support.
Aircraft Gas Turbine Engines
The main research focus of the engine operation group is in flow in inlets and centrifugal compressors of small gas turbine (GTE) engines where it closely cooperates with engine manufacturer PBS Velká Bíteš. Primary concern is in exprimental evaluation of inlet total pressure distortion and its influence to GTE performance and operability and centrifugal compressor surge margin increas utilizing a recilculating bypass duct.
Second research area is engine health monitoring based on vibration monitoring and gas path analysis and blade tip timming and blade tip clearance measurement on small GTE.
Combat Aircraft Survivability
Aircraft combat survivability is scientific discipline, which deals with issues how to improve efficiency and resilience of military aircraft. This topic also includes the task of Aircraft Battle Damage Repair (ABDR). The importance of ABDR is proven by combat experiences from concrete military conflicts. Special attention is paid to battle damage assessment. Our activity is focused to the application of computer vision methods, image processing methods and computer modeling for the purposes of battle damage assessment. Presented method aims to extend the current assessment procedure and make it faster and more effective thanks to IT solution. The basis of developed method is acquiring, processing, analyzing and understanding images of damaged aircraft and then use these information for damage modeling on 3D model. Because of importance of rapid assessment, the whole process is highly automated. The obtained results showed that the application of computer vision tools and damage modeling in battle damage assessment process can be expedient.
Non-destructive inspection of aircraft structures (NDT)
The department is engaged in the development of NDT methods and their application in determining the condition of the airframe and engine. The infrared thermographic method, that proves to be suitable for the inspection of complex structures, such as composite panels or sandwich, is primarily developed. Ultrasonic and eddy current method are studied too.
